LMEA Virtual State Solo and Small Ensemble Assessment

LMEA is proud to present a virtual recital featuring the some of the finest high school and middle school instrumentalists and vocalists in Louisiana. This event has expanded to include both solo and small ensemble performances.

2025 Gold Medal Recipients

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Although pre-qualification at the District level assessment is not required, students are encouraged to do so to get additional feedback and to ensure a better performance quality in their State level submission.
  • This year’s event is open to middle and high school students.
  • All instrumental students (winds, percussion, all strings, piano) must be a member of the band or orchestra at their school. Directors must be a current LMEA member. If there is no band or orchestra program at the school, students may be submitted by an LMEA member.
  • All vocal students must be a member of the choir at their school. Directors must be a current LMEA member. If there is no choir program at the school, students may be submitted by an LMEA member.

DATES: 

April 4, 2025 (midnight). Deadline for submitting the registration form and a copy of the music being performed by each student. (see additional information below)

April 5, 2025. Postmark deadline for all school checks. Registration fees may also be paid online by credit card when registering.

April 7, 2025 (midnight). Deadline for uploading all performance videos to the assigned google folder.
Note: Once a registration form is received, a link to an individual google folder will be sent by Scotty Walker, LMEA Executive Director, to the director. Directors should upload their students’ performance videos to this folder only.

COST: 

$25.00 per solo
$20.00 per ensemble member

If paying by school check, make it payable to LMEA. Mail the check with a copy of your registration confirmation email to: State Solo and Ensemble Assessment, Scotty Walker Executive Director, 410 Holden Ave., Lafayette, LA 70506.

If paying by credit card, a small processing fee will be added.

Any registrations, checks, or videos submitted after the deadlines will not be considered for adjudication. No refund will be issued after the performance videos have been sent to the adjudicators.

VIDEO RECORDING:

  • At the beginning of the video, please clearly state your name(s), school, grade(s), and the title of the solo or ensemble being performed.
  • Please dress appropriately and consider the background. Unprofessional attire or an inappropriate background will be grounds for dismissal.
  • Be aware of the time allotments. (see information below)
  • Submit the performance video as an .mp4 or .mov file only.

MUSIC REQUIREMENTS:

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC REQUIREMENTS:
(winds, percussion, all stringed instruments, piano)

  • High school students must play a solo or small ensemble from the Texas Prescribed Music List (PML) level one or level two.
  • Middle school students must play a solo or small ensemble from either the Texas Prescribed Music List (PML) level one, two, or three or may select a solo from the LMEA middle school supplemental list.
  • Schools or students must own original copies of the music performed.
  • A copy of the music for each entry must be uploaded during the registration process. Write the student’s name on the music. Music will be used only for the purpose of adjudicating the solo or ensemble. All copies will be destroyed after the adjudication is complete. Do not send originals.
  • Memorization is NOT required.
  • All solos with piano accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment. Smart music, CD, etc. are acceptable, but must include only the piano part.
  • Please note: LMEA highly recommends live accompaniments. Solos requiring an accompaniment, but performed without an accompaniment for any reason, will receive comments only.

VOCAL MUSIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • INSTRUMENTAL – High school performances (solo or small ensemble) and are allotted 8 minutes.
  • INSTRUMENTAL – Middle school performances (solo or small ensemble) are allotted 6 minutes.
  • VOCAL – High school and middle school performances (solo or small ensemble) are allotted 6 minutes.

ADJUDICATION FORMS:

The following adjudication forms and rubrics will be used. Students should download and refer to both the adjudication form and the rubric as they prepare their solos.

AWARDS: 

The best solo and/or ensemble performers will be featured in a statewide virtual recital.

All performing soloists and ensemble members will receive a State Patch.

Students whose performances are adjudicated as outstanding will receive a Gold Medal.
Note: All performances will be adjudicated, but traditional ratings will not be given. Only the outstanding (superior) performances will be recognized.
